Legendary by Stephanie Garber | I Couldn’t Put It Down!

It’s been a long time since I’ve picked up a fantasy novel and read it in just one single day, but it happened with Legendary. This book was just impossible to put down! I’d been looking forward to this sequel since I finished the Dutch edition of Caraval before the English one even came out, and it did not disappoint. Here’s my review!

“Not everyone gets a true ending. There are two types of endings because most people give up at the part of the story where things are the worst, where the situation feels hopeless. But that’s when hope is needed most. Only those who persevere can find their true ending.”

My Review

Legendary was… how do I put this? Legendary?! I started taking notes at first but eventually, I got so engrossed in the story that ignored my notebook and just read. Stephanie’s writing is just so whimsical and beautiful! It’s what I loved most about Caraval, and I’m glad Legendary has this same kind of style. I did miss a little bit of the magical-ness, though. It was still an incredible story set in a wonderful place (the capital city! Yay for cities!) but I do feel as if Caraval was just a lot more mysteriously magical. When reading Caraval, I was utterly clueless on the workings of the world, but it almost feels like I’d figured it out and so the mystery was a bit lost on me.

I was a bit weary about having to read from Tella’s perspective. I love Scarlett and for some reason I can’t remember, I didn’t like Tella all that much. However, that changed within the first chapter. I LOVED reading from Tella’s point of view. She knows so much more about the workings of Caraval than Scarlett did! Tella isn’t always very likeable, with her secrets and lies, but I do love her for her bravery and cleverness. Also, she likes kissing! And that’s not a bad thing!

You all know I hate a good haters-to-lovers story and Legendary could be a perfect example of why I love it so much. The characters are so interesting and complex, which leads to even more interesting relationships. The new characters actually added something to the story and were interesting in their own way.

Plotwise, I’m not sure how I actually feel about the book. I love Caraval for the mystery in the game itself but I missed that a little bit in Legendary. Maybe because it wasn’t really a game anymore? To me, it mostly felt like the plot was used to set up book three. Which isn’t really a bad thing! We just got a lot of new information about the workings of the world (like religion, royalty, etc.) that we hadn’t yet learned from book one. Since it was such a change, I guess I just have to get used to it a litle.

From the start, you just know there’s going to be this big reveal of who Legend really is. But you know what? I accidentally spoiled myself before I was even halfway through! And I read the book in less than 12 hours. This kind of stuff only happens to me… Anyway, even with the big spoiler, Legendary was still epic. Though I knew what to expect, I was surprised at every twist and turn. I am sad I knew beforehand who it was, but it was also fun to know and to guess the whys and hows of things. I bet this is great for rereading, too! And I would actually love read Caraval again simply to see if we’ve gotten clues before. Speaking of clues; they were easily the best part of Legendary. I loved them in Caraval and it got even bigger and better in this one.

My Rating

Legendary was literally legendary. It’s been a long time since I big-ish fantasy book like this kept me so captivated I managed to read it in just a day! It’s just as magical as Caraval and Tella brings a brand new, fun perspective to the books. I can’t wait for Finale!

About Legendary

After being swept up in the magical world of Caraval, Donatella Dragna has finally escaped her father and saved her sister Scarlett from a disastrous arranged marriage. The girls should be celebrating, but Tella isn’t yet free. She made a desperate bargain with a mysterious criminal, and what Tella owes him no one has ever been able to deliver: Caraval Master Legend’s true name.
The only chance of uncovering Legend’s identity is to win Caraval, so Tella throws herself into the legendary competition once more – and into the path of the murderous heir to the throne, a doomed love story, and a web of secrets . . . including her sister’s. Caraval has always demanded bravery, cunning, and sacrifice. But now the game is asking for more. If Tella can’t fulfill her bargain and deliver Legend’s name, she’ll lose everything she cares about – maybe even her life. But if she wins, Legend and Caraval will be destroyed forever.

Welcome, welcome to Caraval . . . the games have only just begun.
