Behind the Books: December ’17

The past month has been absolutely crazy in both the worst and best way possible! I talk all about it in my monthly Behind the Books post.

The first draft of this post was an absolute mess. It was to be expected, as I had an absolute mess of a month. In a good way, though. Or, in the best way, actually! The last two weeks of November were extremely difficult, but things really turned around for me in December. Honestly, I just cannot wait to share it all with you guys, so let’s dive straight into my monthly personal update.

The Blog

So, the first half of November wasn’t really that great. I had scheduled so many fun posts that I either un-scheduled because I wasn’t feeling good about them, or I didn’t even schedule/publish stuff at all. I had so much stress and anxiety over so many things in my life, like my search for a job and paying bills on time… It really got me down and I decided blogging wasn’t a priority. Then we had the whole Goodreads and Netgalley thing and I was just… done. Luckily, it all lead to some really great things as well. Like the International Book Bloggers group chat! It feels so incredible to chat with people all over the world. I also started @IntlYABloggers on Twitter to promote and support international bloggers!

December started out crazy. I was excited about blogging again and I managed to do so much work in so little time! I haven’t been this productive in a long time and it’s a really wonderful feeling. I’m really happy about my schedule, my photos and my content and I’m currently working on my Jan/Feb schedule, which is so much fun! The new year feels like a new start and I cannot wait to see what the new year will bring.

I’ve got quite a few things “planned” for 2018! I’m working on a project that’s definitely going to happen, and I have lots of ideas for things I want to do. Of course, I’ll also have to adjust to my new work schedule, because I can’t blog all day, every day anymore, but more on that in a bit!

A Personal Update

I finally found a job! After all the stress and worry and anxiety, I finally found a job and I’m so, so happy! I’ll be working in retail, which always scared me quite a lot, but I’m so happy. I start on Monday and I’m actually really excited! I’m going to have to adjust to this, of course, and it’s right before Christmas so it’s going to be quite crazy, but that’s the best way to learn, right? I’ve scheduled some fun content, so I don’t plan on going on an hiatus or anything. Plus, I’m free during Christmas so I’ll definitely have some time to blog (although I will also be resting, as I’m sure I’ll be exhausted… hehe!) The last few weeks of November weren’t the best, as you know, but I’m happy to leave it behind me.

I have three favourite songs at the moment: Let Me Go by Hailee Steinfeld, It Ain’t Me by Selena Gomez and New Year’s Day by Pentatonix. They’re on repeat like aallll the time and they’re so much fun! I thought I’d be listening to Christmas music a lot but… I’m not! Other than that, I’m playing Animal Crossing sort of obsessively, hehe! Of course, I’m playing the new mobile game Pocket Camp, but I also have my town in New Leaf to think about! I actually bought a new Fire Emblem game this month (Shadows of Valentia) and it’s a bit disappointing after playing another FE game…

November/December Book Haul

I hauled exactly three books over the past month. I mentioned Before She Ignites by Jodi Meadows in my November Behind the Books, but I’m mentioning it again because I now actually own it! Of course, I also finally got my Fairyloot box with The Last Namsara by Kristen Ciccarelli and an ARC of Furyborn by Claire Legrand. They’re all such epic books!

Currently Reading

I’m 6 books away from finishing my Goodreads reading challenge and it’s stressing me out! I’m not exactly in a reading slump, but my pace has suddenly slowed so much and I’m quite anxious about reaching my goal of a 100 books. It’s not a bad kind of stress, it’s more of a “Oh my goodness, I really want to make it!!!!” kind of stress. Anyway, I’m reading my ARC of Furyborn by Claire Legrand (which I’m loving!), and I started listening to The Glass Spare by Lauren DeStefano the day before yesterday and it’s pretty great!

What have you been up to this past month? Are youΒ excited for Christmas?

  • Lara

The last month has been pretty hectic for me! With blogging and reading and work and life things all happening, but that’s sort of just the whole lead up to Christmas vibe. Don’t worry too much about your GR goal! (Or read a couple of novellas so that you hit your target lol)

    • Ayla

It’s definitely the lead up to Christmas that makes life so busy! I love Christmas, but I’ll also be very glad if it’s over, hehe!

I was thinking of reading some novellas (I have some by RenΓ©e Ahdieh on my Kindle App) but for some reason I’d rather read full books… Don’t know why, it doesn’t make a lot of sense, hehe! πŸ™ˆ

  • Sophie Alex

Ooh, I’m curious about what that 2018 project might be…
I WISH I could obsess over Animal Crossing too, but the game is not available in my country’s app store! I was SO upset. The Glass Spare sounds like an awesome book, if it is the one I’m thinking of. Was it the one included in the last Owlcrate box?

Anyway, I’m so glad you got Fairyloot! I am a big fan of book subscription boxes, but shipping is costly to where I live so I’ve never gotten one. HOWEVER (!!!), I decided that I was too excited about them so I bought one myself for my birthday. I already have a present my generous family has given me, but this was a big thing I wanted to have for myself too. I got the Owlcrate box because shipping was less expensive from the US. I think I know what the book will be and I am so excited! No spoilers, though! I’m 8 books away from 100 books this year, which was not even my goal (70), but it’d be so great to reach that! I’m not sure how this will end up… Have a nice day!

    • Ayla

Ahhh I already cannot wait to share what I’ve got planned! I’m usually like “oh I’m doing this or that” but I’m a bit nervous about it so I’ll wait with announcing It until it’s done, hehe! πŸ™ˆ

I think The Glass Spare was actually in an OwlCrate box, but I’m not sure! It’s been really great so far! I haven’t listened to that much yet, but I’m really loving it so far!)

I LOVE subscription boxes, but shipping is definitely a struggle! I got myself a Dutch book box for my birthday last year (and I got November’s Fairyloot from my mom as a present) and it’s honestly the best kind of present!

Good luck finishing your reading challenge! !00 books is a wonderful achievement, even if you didn’t make it all the way! Mine was 50 at first, then 75, but I read so much more than that! 😬

  • Charley Hrobsky

I’m hoping to do a December recap before the month ends, but life gets crazy around the holidays! Congratulations on your new job (again)! I’m excited to see where all these crazy new events will lead you!!

I’m 9 books behind on my GR challenge which is causing a little bit of stress since I don’t know if I will be able to reach my 52 book goal. But I’m hoping to pump out a few books between retail shifts.

    • Ayla

Life DEFINITELY gets crazy around Christmas, for some reason it’s crazier than than usual this year! And thank you so much! It’ll take some time getting used to all the new things, but I’m sure it’ll be so much better in the end!

I completely understand your stress about finishing your Goodreads Challenge! I’ve never had that struggle before until this year, but now I do. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself, though! 40 books is stil a wonderful achievement! πŸ’œ

    • Ayla

Thanks so much! It was definitely a stressful morning (having your first day the week before Christmas comes with both pros (like learning A LOT in a short period) but cons as well (being overwhelmed with all the new things while helping TOO MANY costumers) haha! I’ll get used to it eventually… πŸ˜‰

  • Gayathri

I love It Ain’t me and the Pentatonix. I love their Hallelujah and Bohemian rhapsody.

Otherwise, December is perfectly fine for me. Not too hectic nor boring, I think I am pretty happy with the month.

    • Ayla

Hallelujah is one of my favourite Pentatonix songs! It’s so incredible! 🎢

I usually really love December, but this year is a bit too crazy for me, hahah! πŸ™ˆ

  • Marie .

Congratulations on the job! I hope eveything will go well and that you will enjoy what you do πŸ™‚ I’m sorry you felt in a bit of a slump in November, but glad to hear that’s all gone now and you’re ready to go and blog your heart out. Also, really happy about the International bloggers chat, it is pretty amazing to talk with international bloggers like that πŸ™‚
Hope you’ll have an amazing December πŸ˜€ xx

    • Ayla

Thanks so much, Marie! My first day was quite something, but I’l get used to it eventually, hehe! 🌸 It’s really wonderful to be able to read and blog again without all the struggles of a slump! I’m really loving the chat (although I’m not very active anymore, I’m so glad I’m in it!)

I hope you have the most wonderful Christmas! πŸŽ„πŸ’œ

  • dominique_x

Congratulations on the job!! I hope it will be a fun place to work πŸ™‚ New Years Day is a great song πŸ™‚ I am not really excited for Christmas to be honest. I really like the days before Christmas, but the actual day feels like sort of a obligation πŸ™ Hopefully it will be a fun day after all. Good luck with readin <3 100 books is a lot!!

    • Ayla

I competed understand how you feel about Chrismtas! I feel the same, honestly. It’s all so exciting until it’s actually Christmas and then I’m just like… ugh nope, hahah! πŸŽ„

Thanks so much, 100 books is definitely a lot and I never expected to read so many, but I’m so close! πŸ™ˆ
