A Beginner’s Guide to Audiobooks #5: Activities & Audiobooks

Can't sit still when you're listening to audiobooks? No worries, I got you covered! Here's a bunch of activities you can do while listening to a book!Listening to audiobooks can be a real challenge when you’re the kind of person who can’t just sit still and do nothing. I’m the sort of person who could just stare out the window for an hour, but I can totally imagine if you’re not! A while ago I listened to so many audiobooks that eventually I just got bored. I started thinking of more things to do than just sit and listen, so today I’m giving you a list of activities to do while listening to your book.

If you just start listening to audiobooks and sometimes “zone out” of a story like I did, it would be a smart idea to only do simple activities, or nothing at all until you’re used to it. Start small and easy until you’ve got the hang of it, and in the end you’ll be able to multitask! There’s a whole of of things you can do while listening to audiobooks, here are a few of them:

This sounds obvious, but at the same time it doesn’t.. Or something. I always do something while listening to an audiobook because otherwise I might as well just read an actual book? Anyway, a while ago my health was at its worst and I had no energy to pick up a book. Audiobooks quite literally saved my life! Also, when I’m really loving an audiobook and I want to finish it, I can sometimes spend hours doing nothing at all. It’s laziness at its best!

If doing nothing is not for you, colouring might be an option! These days nearly all the big YA series have their own colouring book, but it doesn’t have to be YA or Bookish. I got The Time Garden by Daria Song (flip through here!) for my birthday last year and it’s like a story and colouring book in one and it is incredible! Anyway, back to audiobooks: I coloured almost an entire spread* while listening to the last ninety minutes of The Kiss of Deception a while ago because it’s the most relaxing thing ever. Honestly, goodbye meditation, hellooooo audiobooks and colouring!

This one is a little tricky because you can easily be distracted by the texts on these websites, but if you just want to look at images and reblog/pin stuff, why not do it while listening to an audiobook? I save interesting looking texts for later and just look at the pictures. Maybe you can even search for the book you’re listening to! I don’t do this often, but it’s definitely an option.

This one is also rather tricky because you won’t be able to hear much when your electric mixer is performing “The Sounds of Hell” (Ha! The sounds of my standmixer terrify me!) and measuring while listening isn’t a good idea either. What about decorating, though? How fun would it be to listen to a book and decorate your cookies?! It should be a piece of cake! (Oh, my goodness. I didn’t even see that pun coming! Hehehe…)

Working Out

If, unlike me, you don’t need music for your workouts, try an audiobook! I’ve personally never done it before because I like to listen to upbeat/dance songs during workouts, but lots of people online say this really works for them! Audiobooks could be a great distraction if your workout is difficult or hard, but be careful not to lose concentration, otherwise you will lose track of what’s going on in the book.

Alright, chores aren’t the most fun thing to do, but wouldn’t it get better with an audiobook? Lately I’ve been tidying my room every morning and doing it with an audiobook makes it way easier. You could listen to a book while cleaning, doing laundry… As long as the task isn’t too difficult and doesn’t make too much noise, it’d be perfect!

Falling Asleep

If you’re one of those people that fall asleep right when their head hits the pillow, I envy you! I listen to audiobooks while falling asleep almost every night if I listen to an audiobook. And I doubt I’m the only one, because all audiobook apps I’ve tried so far actually have a sleep timer! It really helps me fall asleep faster and I sometimes feel like audiobooks are an actual blessing.

And so many other things…

Obviously you can listen to audiobooks whenever you want and whatever you’re doing! I know lots of people listening to books while driving and travelling, but as I’m currently doing neither of these things, I decided not to put them on the list (plus: they seem quite obvious to me!)

What kind of activities do you do while listening to audiobooks? Do you have any advice on what to do while listening to a book? Let’s chat in the comments!

Haha, I am that kind of person who can’t do nothing while listening to audiobooks. Colouring is a good idea to do, I also like to walk and listen to audiobooks, or just cycle. I once tried working-out while listening to an audiobook, but that didn’t work for me, because I could not focus on the book that much, I like music better.

I don’t often walk and cycle these days (as I’m stuck at home most of the time) but I loved travelling and listening to audiobooks! I often sat on the train to school or internship just staring out of the window and listening to a book, it was the best thing ever! 😉

I’ve been travelling for the last two weeks and have finally had a chance to listen to an Audiobook! (Thanks to your recommendations and these posts). I’m not the sort of person who can sit there and do nothing either, I find it too hard and get distracted way too easily. BUT, when I’ve been travelling, it’s been perfect! I’ve had multiple long train journeys and audiobooks have been my saviour. I think I’ll definitely listen to them when I drive to and from work when I get home as well.

Colouring is a good idea too! I love colouring and normally listen to music, but audiobooks would work too.

I’m off to catch up on the rest of this series since I’ve missed a couple of posts… Is this the last instalment or will there be more??

I’m so glad you like listening to audiobooks and found my posts useful! I wish I listened to audiobooks when I travelled to and from college, it would’ve really saved me from being bored all the time, haha!

There will be one more post this Sunday, with recommendations and a bit of advice on listening to audiobooks. 😉

Listening to one whilst I bath is a good one. Its the only thing that has worked for me. I got a colouring book for my birthday so I may try that

    • Ayla

Oh, that IS a good one! I think I did that once, a really long time ago! It was really nice and it’s less stressful than making sure your book doesn’t fall into the water. 😉

I LOVE going to sleep with an audiobook. I have to screenshot right before every time because I sure doze off before I remember. I don’t even make progress on the book, but it soothes me to sleep just fine! I loved to do coloring when I had just started out listening to them, but now I do other things like checking out social media, netowrking with other people (like right now! I’m listening to Heir Of Fire by Sarah J. Maas for my re-read of the series!), and on the bus to school. Audiobooks are great.

Taking a screenshot before going to sleep is such a great idea! I’ve had soooo many struggles finding the time once I accidentally fell asleep. Lately I’ve pretty much only been listening to audiobooks when going to bed and waking up, it’s really lovely!

I wish I could check my social media and network while listening to a book, haha! But I can’t… I lose focus on the book AND mess up whatever I’m writing/typing so it’s just not very useful to me, hahah! 😉
