Waiting on Wednesday: Before She Ignites by Jodi Meadows

I love Jodi Meadows. She wrote my all time favourite books (The Orphan Queen & The Mirror King!) and she’s pretty much the only one who sends her pre-order goodies out internationally. (YAY!) I still stare at my Mirror King quote card every day! Anyway, she’s got a new book coming out: Before She Ignites. I’m so excited for this book! Want to know why? Read about it in today’s Waiting on Wednesday.

Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Breaking The Spine.

Illegal Dragon Trafficking

OH. MY. GOODNESS. Illegal dragon trafficking!? Okay, confession time: I don’t like dragons very much. But ever since listening to the audiobook of Incarnate (also by Jodi) I kind of like them? And illegal dragon trafficking just sounds really cool and badass, hehe!

The Cover

Not only has this cover a person of colour on it, it’s also absolutely beautiful! It just gets prettier every time I look at it. I’s so incredibly magical already and I cannot wait to actually read it.

A Main Character Mental Illness

A high fantasy trilogy with a main character who counts compulsively and struggles with crippling anxiety!? YES PLEASE! I’ve read some mental health books over the summer and they were so interesting! But I keep going back to fantasy and it’s just so wonderful to be able to read about a fantasy character with mental illness!

First book in the Fallen Isles Trilogy

Think about it: when you finish this book (which could have a cliffhanger, who knows?!) you have to wait for the next book. Yes, that’s torture. But then there’s the good stuff: book 2 title announcement, synopsis, COVER! Looking at Jodi’s other books, they’re probably gonna be really awesome and – obviously – they will match! Ah, I already can’t wait for book 2. I know I’m getting ahead of things, I’M SORRY! Also, the trilogy is called the Fallen Isles Trilogy. OMG. Sounds epic.

I usually avoid early reviews and don’t care much for praise from bookish websites and authors, but I have to admit the praise for Before She Ignites makes me beyond excited to read this book. You can read some of the praise for the book on

About Before She Ignites

“A fully realized fantasy world complete with dragons, treachery, and flawed characters discovering their courage. I couldn’t put it down!” —C. J. Redwine, New York Times bestselling author of The Shadow Queen

From the New York Times bestselling co-author of My Lady Jane comes a smoldering new fantasy trilogy perfect for fans of Victoria Aveyard and Kristin Cashore about a girl condemned for defending dragons and the inner fire that may be her only chance of escape.

Mira has always been a symbol of hope for the Fallen Isles, perfect and beautiful—or at least that’s how she’s forced to appear. But when she uncovers a dangerous secret, Mira is betrayed by those closest to her and sentenced to the deadliest prison in the Fallen Isles.

Except Mira is over being a pawn. Fighting to survive against outer threats and inner demons of mental illness, Mira must find her inner fire and the scorching truth about her own endangered magic—before her very world collapses.

And that’s all before she ignites.

I’ve never heard of Jodi Meadows before to be honest, but this cover is absolutely gorgeous and makes me really curious about the book. I’m not a huge fan of dragons, but the summary sounds really interesting 🙂 I have put it on my TBR and I am going to check out Jodi’s other books really soon.
