Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy by Cassandra Clare

In preparation of the release of Lord of Shadows, I decided to read Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy before rereading Lady Midnight. I’ve heard many people say that this companion to TMI is best read before the Dark Artifices, and I have to agree. I’m so glad I read this book! These 10 stories are so valuable to TDA. It’s not necessary to read them all, but I really suggest you do! Beware of SPOILERS in this review!

“We all change the world, with every day of living in it,” Magnus said. “You just have to decide how you want to change the world.”

My Review

When reading Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy, you should really keep in mind that these are ten separate stories, since it’s a bundle of novellas. They have different timing and characters. I really liked this, because somehow all stories could still be tied to our beloved characters. I’m not going to review all ten novellas in this post, but I did on Goodreads! Just beware of SPOILERS, since it’s rather difficult to review them without saying what they are about and who is/are involved. I’m reviewing my three favourites in this post!

The Fiery Trail

This novella is basically all about Parabatai, one of my favourite things about the Shadowhunter Chronicles. It also has Magnus, Jem and Clary! And Emma and Julian… Oh boy, this is PERFECT! Just the character in this story alone are wonderful. The story itself is too. We basically get a closer look at the whole Parabatai ceremony and a whoooole lot of background on both The Mortal Instruments and The Dark Artifices. This novella was so lovely I read it in one go sometime late at night, simply because I loved it so much! If you decide to get the novellas in eBook form, definitely go for this one!

Born to Endless Night

This one is all about Malec! But what are they doing at the Academy? Well, Magnus is doing a series of guest lectures. That’s it. I can’t even call that a spoiler because oh my, the things that go down in this novella! Let’s talk about Alec’s character development for like… AN HOUR!? Because that precious, badass cinnamon roll has really developed so much. Also, this one made me laugh out loud so many times. It’s the perfect combination of seriousness and hilarious moments. What I didn’t really understand, though, were the Lightwoods. Man, they have gone mad to the point it actually started to annoy me, ha! This one has a lot of Malec stuff, so Malec shippers, this one’s definitely for you!

Angels Twice Decending

This novella is the one I’ve been needing without realising that I actually needed it. It was the perfect end to the bindup, since it’s Simon’s Ascension! I just have to mention this one thing: Don’t listen to Ed Sheeran’s latest album when reading this, hehe. I was a mess! It was such a beautifully told story! It was really heartbreaking at the same time. I mean, we all know what the cup could do to a human… It felt like the death in this story was useless and meaningless. I struggle with it, because I mean, we know what the cup can do to humans. But still. I’m a tad bit salty about it. Other than the heartbreaking death, I really liked the story! Oh gosh, this sounds so weird, hahah!

My Rating

Overall, I enjoyed Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy a whole lot! I definitely liked some novellas better than others, but that actually makes perfect sense. My rating and review might feel a bit off, but I’ve only reviewed my favourites for this blog post! Reviews of the other novellas can be found on Goodreads.

About Tales From The Shadowhunter Academy

The New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling collection of short stories chronicling the adventures of Simon Lewis as he trains to become a Shadowhunter is now available in print for the first time with ten brand-new comic illustrations!

Simon Lewis has been a human and a vampire, and now he is becoming a Shadowhunter. The events of City of Heavenly Fire left him stripped of his memories, and Simon isn’t sure who he is anymore. So when the Shadowhunter Academy reopens, Simon throws himself into this new world of demon-hunting, determined to find himself again. Whomever this new Simon might be.

But the Academy is a Shadowhunter institution, which means it has some problems. Like the fact that non-Shadowhunter students have to live in the basement. At least Simon’s trained in weaponry—even if it’s only from hours of playing D&D.

Join Simon on his journey to become a Shadowhunter, and learn about the Academy’s illustrious history along the way, through guest lecturers such as Jace Herondale, Tessa Gray, and Magnus Bane. Written by Cassandra Clare, Sarah Rees Brennan, Maureen Johnson, and Robin Wasserman, these moving and hilarious short stories are perfect for the fan who just can’t get enough of the Shadowhunters.
