The Mortal Instruments: City of Glass by Cassandra Clare

City of Glass is by far the best book in the Shadowhunter Chronicles, it's one of my favourites! Read all about it in my spoiler free review.

City of Glass is the third book in the Mortal Instruments series and definitely my new favourite book. If you thought City of Bones and City of Ashes were good, just wait until you’ve read this one!  I was going to slow down reading the TMI series, but I just couldn’t wait any longer and got the book. I hope you enjoy my spoiler free review of City of Glass.

“The cold snap of the previous week was over; the sun was shining brightly as Clary hurried across Luke’s dusty front yard, the hood of her jacket up to keep her hair from blowing across here face. The weather might have warmed up, but the wind off the East River could still be brutal. It carried with it a faint chemical smell, mixed with the Brooklyn smell of asphalt, gasoline and burned sugar from the abandoned factory down the street.”

To save her mother’s life, Clary travels to Idris, home of the Shadowhunters. Meanwhile Valentine threatens to destroy them all. In order to defeat him, they will have to work alongside their eternal enemies: Downworlders. Fortunately for all of them, Clary knows just how to handle the situation.

I’m just going to let my fangirl side out for a bit: ”OH MY GOD! WE’RE GOING TO IDRIS!” Yes, this was literally my first thought when I started City of Glass. After reading so much about it, I couldn’t wait to go on this journey!

The start of City of Glass was a little weak. Once I got through the first few chapters the weak part was over and we jumped straight into the action, heartbreak, plot twists and some seriously intense situations. It was everything I expected and even more. The plot was really good. I was somewhere in the middle and it felt like I was reading the City of Bones and City of Ashes finales mixed together. But it wasn’t even the finale yet! There was a lot of unexpected action through the entire book and it really kept me on the edge of my seat.

The setting in City of Glass was amazing. We didn’t just get to see and experience Idris and Alicante, we were in a whole new world. I love the New York Shadow World, but it was a really nice change. Lots of trilogies and series stay in one place, so it was an interesting turn of events. I’d actually love to live in Idris! (As long as there’s no gruesome deaths and stuff.. hehe!)

Clary and Jace might be the most important characters, but I just don’t like them very much. Alec, Magnus and Isabelle are definitely my favourites though! The new characters – specially Sebastian – were really great. One of the new characters is responsible for a major plot twist that I just didn’t see coming! It was really good and really bad at the same time and now I don’t know whether to love or hate him.. Ahh, fictional character struggles! One death was very saddening and actually not very necessary to me. I’m really sad about it!

The finale of City of Glass was epic. I’m so happy with how the first part of the Mortal Instruments series was wrapped up. All my questions were answered and the end was just so satisfying!
