The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

I recently discovered The Mortal Instruments series and decided to pick it up! City of Bones is part one in the series & I decided to review it.

A few years ago I wasn’t really into reading and I only read populair books like Twilight, The Hunger Games and Divergent. Somehow I completely missed out on The Mortal Instruments, both the book and the movie. Fortunately for me, Shadowhunters premiered on Netflix and I discovered the series. Soon after I watched the movie and pilot episode I ordered City of Bones and I read and reviewed it!

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” the bouncer said. folding his arms across his massive chest. He stared down at the boy in the red zip-up jacket and shook his shaved head. “You can’t bring that thing in here.” The fifty or so teenagers in line outside of the Pandemonium Club leaned forward to eavesdrop. It was a long wait to get into the all-ages club, especially on a Sunday, and not much generally happened in line. The bouncers were fierce and would come down instantly on anyone who looked like they were going to start trouble fifteen-year-old Clary Fray, standing in line with her best friend, Simon, leaned forward along with everyone else, hoping for some excitement.”

Clary Fray goes to the Pandemonium Club one night and witnesses a murder. But the thing is, there’s no body. She also seems to be the only one who’s able to see the three teenagers, covered in strange tattoos, who did it. These teenagers turn out to be Shadowhunters; warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. When Clary’s mother disappears and she’s attacked by a demon herself, she becomes a part of a whole new world she didn’t even know existed.

I’m usually the book-before-movie kind of person, but in this case I didn’t even know about The Mortal Instruments until the movie was already out! I cannot believe I haven’t read City of Bones earlier. Unfortunately, since I saw the movie first, I knew what was going to happen. I spoilt the plot for myself by watching the movie first. Luckily it didn’t bother me too much, I still enjoyed it a whole lot! I just think I would’ve enjoyed it much more without watching the movie first.

I got my first taste of Urban Fantasy when reading Angelfall by Susan Ee, and my expectations for the genre were “dark and serious” but in City of Bones, that’s really not the case! The writing is really funny and I didn’t expect to be laughing so much. I’m really glad it was written in third person, because instead of endless personal thoughts, we got a whole lot of world building. And trust me, the Shadow World is amazing.

The Shadow World contains all kinds of supernatural creatures like vampires and werewolves, plus demons, angels and the fey! Basically, it’s a lot of different YA Fantasy/Paranormal books combined. The cool thing about the Mortal Instruments is that all these creatures have their own place in this world, with the Shadowhunters in the center of it. The supernatural creatures aren’t explained any further and I’m happy about it. There’s plenty other YA books giving those creatures their background.

The characters were enjoyable, but I really missed some character development. Where The Shadow World had a lot of depth, the characters didn’t. The only characters I really liked were Clary, Jace and Alec. I didn’t care much for the others, specially Simon. I really dislike him and I just don’t know why! I like Alec the most, because I feel like his character developed most through the story.

City of Bones had some really great original turns and plot twists. Even though I already knew about the big plot twist at the end from the movie, it was really surprising and fun to read! If I hadn’t know it before, it would probably be the best and most shocking plot twist ever! There’s a few things in the storyline that I didn’t like, but overall, this is definitely one of my favourite books.

My City of Bones review including spoilers and my favourite part of the book can be found on Goodreads.

My Rating

City of Bones will definitely be added to my favourites shelf! The story was very well put together and I absolutely loved it. I definitely recommend this book, even though most of you will probably have read it already.
